Mental health facilities are inspected using rules and guidelines provided by the Department of Mental Health that include all life and fire safety issues. Fire alarms, fire extinguishers, extinguishing systems, electrical and hazardous locations, as well as general building conditions and exits are all closely examined during an inspection. Mental health group homes and day programs are required to submit plans to the Division of Fire Safety’s Fire Safety Inspection Unit prior to being licensed. Once licensed, these facilities are inspected annually by the Fire Safety Inspection Unit.
